Review: Blood Red Road

I have nothing but praise for the writing, the characters, the plot, every little thing. If you haven't read this book yet, I'm telling you right now to please stop making the same mistake that I made for over a year! Read. This. Book. ASAP. It is exceptional!

ARC Review: The Selection

I was a bit hesitant to read The Selection after... the fact that this book is described as The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games, but... I was pleasantly surprised! I actually really enjoyed this book!

ARC Review: Masque of the Red Death

Debauchery Club. Steampunk. Dystopia. Hot boys. Are you sold yet? I sure as hell was from the moment that I first read the synopsis! And I can say, without a second thought, that this book lived up to and surpassed all of my expectations!

ARC Review: The Last Echo

...I was so sad when I first read the title of this book because I thought that it meant that it was going to be the end of an awesome series, but luckily the title is misleading! I adore this series and everything about it, and The Last Echo was no exception.

Review: Desires of the Dead

I finally decided to pick up Desires of the Dead and am so glad that I did; it was such a fantastic read!... Overall, I loved this sequel! It was very well written and I loved the mystery and suspense in the plot...

Review: Afterlife

The Evernight series was one of the first that I began reading when I got into young adult books about four years ago, so I'm really sad to see it come to an end, but I've really enjoyed reading the series and Afterlife was no different!

ARC Review: Falling Under

By Gwen Hayes
Published by New American Library
Released: March 1, 2011

Rating: 5 Stars
Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she's seen Haden before- not around town, but in her dreams.

As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.

And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia's not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

When this book showed up in the mail, I was so excited about it and immediatly put it at the top of my TBR pile. I'm so glad I did because this book was spectacular and kept me up until the early hours of the morning reading, needing to find out what would happen next.

Everything about this book did it for me. The characters were well developped and I felt connected to them from the very beginning, the plot was gripping and the story was unique and unlike anything I've ever really read before.

Theia is a seventeen year old girl who lives a very shelted life. Her father tries to control pretty much everything about her; he never lets her wear her hair down because it is too wild and untamed, everything that she wears was picked out for her by someone that her dad hired, every aspect of her life is controlled by her father. It's obvious from the very first page of this book that Theia is desperate to break away from her father's control, but as soon as Haden shows up in town, not only does Theia's father loose all control over her, but Theia begins to loose control of herself.

I had a love/hate relationship with Theia. I hated that she allowed her father to have so much control over her, but I loved it when she started to break free and finally be her own person and not just the person that her father wanted her to be. Ever since the first moment that Theia spent with Haden, her world started to unravel. I really enjoyed watching Theia break out of her shell and really blossom from a shy girl who was next to invisible into someone much stronger, someone who was willing to fight for what she wanted.

Haden was probably one of the sexiest guys that I've had the pleasure of reading about in quite some time, and that's no suprise considering what he is (which you'll have to read the book to find out!). He could be so dark, wicked and menacing one moment,  and so sweet, loving and gentle the next. As the book progresses and we find out what the cause of these conflicting actions and emotions is, we really start to see Haden in a completely different light as the struggle that he's going through becomes even more apparent. I really, really enjoyed Haden's character, he was the perfect blend of bad boy and sweetheart for me. He could have me annoyed with him one moment and swooning the next! I really hope that there's going to be a sequel to Falling Under (which I'm sure there will be considering how it left off) so that I can have even more of him!

I seriously loved everything about this book! Gwen Hayes' writing was beautiful. I was able to feel so connected with the characters and really feel their emotions. Falling Under was definitly a sexy book, maybe not recommended for younger readers, but for me the sexiness of it was just right; it fit perfectly with the story, only adding to my enjoyment of the book.

Thanks so much for reading my review of Falling Under by Gwen Hayes, I hope that you enjoyed it! I really hope that everyone goes out and picks up a copy, because I highly recommend reading this book, it will not disappoint!

ARC Review: Blood and Flowers

By Penny Blubaugh
Published by HarperTeen
Released: March 1, 2011
Source: For review from publisher
Rating: 4 Stars
Three years ago, Persia ran away from her drug-addict parents and found a home with the Outlaws, an underground theater troupe. With time, this motley band of mortals and fey, puppeteers and actors, becomes the loving family Persia never had, and soon Persia not only discovers a passion for theater but also falls in love with one of the other Outlaws. Life could not be more perfect.

Until an enemy makes an unfair accusation against the group and forces them to flee their world and hide in the neighboring realm of Faerie. But in Faerie, all is not flowers and rainbows. With bloodthirsty trolls, a hostile monarchy, and a dangerous code of magic, the fey world is far from the safe haven the Outlaws had hoped for....

Following up her critically acclaimed Serendipity Market, Penny Blubaugh has created a beautiful and mysterious world where anything can happen—especially what you least expect.

What first drew me to Blood and Flowers by Penny Blubaugh was its beautiful cover, but what kept me reading was the unique concept and great story. Oh, and faeries. I'd forgotten how much I loved faeries, but was thankfully reminded how much I love them by Blood and Flowers!

Blood and Flowers takes place in a world where everyone knows about Fey. Where everyone blames the Fey for everything; crime, drug abuse, etc. Where everyone is afraid of the Fey's magic. Persia and her friends, one who's in fact a faerie, are all apart of a travelling theatre troupe and they always use faerie magic in their shows to give it a little somthing extra. When an enemy of the group uses the groups use of magic  against them and begins spreading rumours about the group dealing illigal faerie "drugs" (pixie dust, coloured drinks), they are forced to flee into the land of Faerie in order to escape the possibilty of being thrown in prision for crimes that they didn't commit. Once they reach Faerie, they realize that not everything is perfect like they hoped it would be and that Faerie may be even more dangerous than their world.

The central character, Persia, was a great character. Although I don't think she realized it herself, I found her to be a strong character, pretty much the rock of the whole group. If it hadn't been for her, I don't think that the troupe would have made it through everything that they did. At the beginning of the book, she seemed to like to just be in the background, but as the book progressed I could tell that she realized just what she could do if she took charge and I really liked that.

I also really loved the diversity of the people in the threatre group. There is Tonio, the sort of leader of the Outlaws (that's the name of their troupe) who is gay and rather flamboyant, there is Max, Tonio's ex-boxer boyfriend, then there is Floss, the fierce and artistic and talented faerie, Lucia, a sweet and fragile girl, and lastly Nicolas, a law student. I really loved how all of these people who were so different from one another could come together and from their very own tight-knit family.

The idea behind Blood and Flowers was rather original, I thought, and I really liked that. I though thought that Penny Blubaugh's writing was great and just like the book, I felt that it had a special uniquness to it. Although the book wasn't focused mainly on romance, I really liked the little sprinkle that was incorperated into the story!

As a whole, I really enjoyed Blood and Flowers and found it to be a great, quick read! The story was really unique, like nothing I've ever really read before and the characters were fun and diverse. I would definitley recommend picking a copy up if you are a fan a faeries or if you are just looking for something different to read!

Thanks for reading my review of Blood and Flowers by Penny Blubaugh! I hope that you enjoyed it!

Megan McCafferty Talks About Bumped

Hey guys! I just came across this clip of author Megan McCafferty talking about her upcoming book Bumped, which I know many of us are greatly anticipating, and about the inspiration and message behind it, so I thought that I would share it with you all! I can't wait to read this one!

Follow Friday (14) and Book Blogger Hop (13)

It's Follow Friday! Follow My Blog Friday is an awesome weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee's View!

This weeks question is:

Share your current fav television show! Tell us a bit about it...

Well, I don't know if I can narrow it down to just one TV show. I watch alot of television... But my favourites are The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, Glee, 90210, Hellcats, America's Next Top Model, Pretty Little Liars and Desperate Housewives (EDIT: thanks to BLHmistress I just realized that I forgot to include possibly my favourite show, which is True Blood!!!). But seeing as I can't talk about each of these shows without making this post super long, I'll just tell you a bit about The Vampire Diaries. The Vampire Diaries is based of the book series of the same name by L.J.Smith and it's about Elena Gilbert and everything that happens to her and her friends after two new brothers, Stephan and Damon, show up in her town. Elena falls in love with Stephan and soon learns that he and his brother are both vampires and that Elena is the doppelganger of the woman that they were both in love with when they were human, the woman who was responsible for them becoming vampires. The show is pretty much about all of the dangers that obviously come with being involved with vampires. It's kind of hard to explain, but I'm sure that most of you reading this right now have at least and idea of what the show is about, and if not, then I'm sure you can easily find out more online!

It's Friday! Which means that it's time for the Book Blogger Hop! Yay! Just in case you didn't know, the Hop is an awesome weekly event hosted by Jennifer at Crazy For Books!

Interview With Anna Humphrey, Author of Rhymes With Cupid!

Hi guys! I had the wonderful opportunity to be able to interview Anna Humphrey, the author of Rhymes With Cupid, and am so glad to share this interview with you! Here it is:

1. What first inspired you to start writing?

I remember reading (and loving) Gordon Korman’s books when I was about 10. I found out that he wrote This Can’t be Happening at Macdonald Hall when he was 12 and decided I was totally going to beat him. I made it about five hand-written pages into my first “novel” before giving up on the idea of being a child prodigy. Still, I never let go of the dream of writing a book one day, and I worked toward it slowly over the years.

2. What made you decide to write a Valentine's Day themed novel?

An editor at HarperTeen who had read the manuscript for my other book, Mission (Un)Popular invited me to submit some funny, Valentine’s-themed book ideas, and I wasn’t about to say no! Thank goodness, I didn’t, too! I had a blast writing Rhymes with Cupid.

3. What has been your best and your worst Valentine's Day experience?

I’m not a big fan of overcrowded restaurants or braving the February winds while all dressed up in a short skirt, so my best Valentine’s Days have been pretty low key. Take-out food and a rented movie with my husband, mostly. As for my worst... I got dumped just before Valentine’s Day... while lying in a hospital bed. Yeah. Ouch.

4. Do you have any other upcoming projects? Any new books in the works?

I have an upper-middle grade novel coming out this June (the same one I mentioned above). It’s called Mission (Un)Popular and it’s about a girl named Margot who discovers how, with just a few bad decisions, a person can go from being bullied to being the bully.

5. I know that there are so many aspiring authors out there, do you have any advice that you could give them?

I think people who want to be published authors need to treat writing the same way people who want to be concert violinists treat playing the violin. In other words, you have to practice. A lot. Nearly every day. Also, you need to show your work to people and get feedback. It helps to find some kind of mentor or teacher, too.

If the idea of ‘practicing writing’ seems boring or unnecessary, imagine that wanna-be-concert-violinist letting their violin sit gathering dust in a corner for weeks or months on end. Imagine them never letting anyone hear them play, and never bothering to take lessons, and then expecting to pick up their instrument one day and nail an audition for a symphony orchestra. In general, it just doesn’t work that way... not with music, and not with writing (unless you’re the equivalent of a 12-year-old Gordon Korman, of course, but, unfortunately, most of us aren’t). Still, if you really & truly devote yourself to your writing over time, I believe there’s no stopping you.

Thanks so much for the interview Anna!

ARC Review: Cloaked

By Alex Flinn
Published by HarperCollins
Released: February 8, 2011
Source: For review from publisher
Rating: 3 Stars
I’m not your average hero. I actually wasn’t your average anything. Just a poor guy working an after-school job at a South Beach shoe repair shop to help his mom make ends meet. But a little magic changed it all.

It all started with the curse. And the frognapping. And one hot-looking princess, who asked me to lead a rescue mission.

There wasn’t a fairy godmother or any of that. And even though I fell in love along the way, what happened to me is unlike any fairy tale I’ve ever heard. Before I knew it, I was spying with a flock of enchanted swans, talking (yes, talking!) to a fox named Todd, and nearly trampled by giants in the Everglades.

Don’t believe me? I didn’t believe it either. But you’ll see. Because I knew it all was true, the second I got CLOAKED.

So, Cloaked was my first time ever reading anythings by Alex Flinn and to be honest, I was a little disappointed, I expected more. Cloaked was a fun read, but I, for the most part, like to read more serious books, and Cloaked was a bit to much on the playful and silly side for my taste. But if you are a fan of more light-hearted romances, then this might just be the book for you.

Cloaked is the story of Johnny, whose family, which consists of him and his mother, is struggling to make ends meet with their tiny shoe repair business. When the gorgous princess shows up and asks him to save her brother, she promises that in return, Johnny may have her hand in marriage and all the money that he could ever need. Hesitiant at first to agree to help the princess, Johnny eventually agrees, enticed by the princess' beauty and money. He then goes off on a journey to save the princess' brother in order to fufil her request and claim his reward.

Johnny's character just kind of starts of as your normal, average boy, that is until everything changes once he meets the princess. Nothing really stuck out to me about Johnny, to be honest, and I didn't really find that he had a whole lot a depth, which was made even more clear to me when all Johnny could think about when he met the princess was "she's so hot". Although this was my least favourite quality about Johnny, it was also the one that made his character seem more realistic to me. Johnny's 17 year old boy who has a stunningly beautiful and rich princess offering to marry him and give him all the money that he could ever want. I'm pretty sure that that would be a dream come true for most teenaged boys and that they wouldn't care whether or not they loved the princess or not, they would just want her for her beauty and her money, just like Johnny. Although this didn't impress me about Johnny, it was probably an accurate response for a teenaged boy in Johnny's situation.

As the book went on, I did find that Johnny started to loose some of his shollowness as he started to realize that just a pretty face and some money might not make him really happy, but this wasn't really enough to change his mind about anything, which kind of unimpressed me. Luckily, Johnny somewhat redeemed himself when he finally realized (beware, tiny spoiler ahead) that he was in love with his best friend Meg, who had always been there for him. After this realization, Johnny knew that he couldn't marry the princess because he could never truely be happy with someone other then Meg, and so he decided that he couldn't marry the princess even if it meant giving up the money.

Meg was Johnny's best friend. They had been best friends for quite a while and Meg was always there for Johnny, supporting his dream of one day becoming a world renowned shoe designer, and anything else that he did. From the very beginning, it was plainly obvious that Meg was in love with Johnny, but Johnny, being a somewhat thick-headed teenaged boy, never realized it. Meg gives Johnny so many hints towards her feelings throughout the book, but Johnny is so distracted trying to find the princess' brother, that he doesn't notice her hints. I quite liked Meg's character, so I was happy that she got her happy ending when Johnny finally realized on his own that it was Meg that he loved and wanted to be with and not the princess.

The way that Alex Flinn mashes up numerous different fairy tales all into one book is quite interesting and cool. All of the different bits and pieces of faity tales mixed together made for quite an interesting journey for Johnny and Meg. They came across many talking animals, such as swans, rats, foxes and frogs. They even had to fight giants. Because of this, I was never really able to predict what was going to happen next and that is always a quality that I enjoy in a book. Trying to identify all of the fairy tales that were incorperated into Cloaked as well was really fun and brought me back to my childhood as I was reminded of some of my favourites!

As a whole, Cloaked was a pretty good book, but a little too on the silly and playful side for me to really enjoy it. As I mentioned before, I'm into more serious books and Cloaked was missing this. If you enjoy books that are very light-hearted and not so serious, then I would definitley recommend picking up Cloaked! Or, if you are like me and like something more serious for the most part, I wouldn't cross this one off your list, but just save it for a day when you want something light and cute to read.
I hoped that you enjoyed my review of Cloaked by Alex Flinn, pease comment and follow!

As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he’s a revenant—an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

In this incandescent debut, newcomer Amy Plum has created a powerful paranormal mythology with immortal revenants. The Paris setting comes enchantingly alive as a relentless struggle between good and evil takes place in its streets. Rich with romance, atmosphere, and thrills, Die for Me will leave readers breathlessly awaiting its sequel.

It's Follow Friday! Follow My Blog Friday is an awesome weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee's View!

This weeks question is:

If you are a fan of Science Fiction what is your favorite book? If you haven't read Science Fiction before...any inkling to? Anything catch your eye?

I'm not really a fan of science fiction, but I have Across the Universe by Beth Revis sitting on my shelf waiting to be read, so we'll see if that changes my mind :)

ARC Review: Rival

By Sara Bennett Wealer
Published by HarperCollins
Released: February 15, 2011
Source: For review from publisher
Rating: 4.5 Stars
What if your worst enemy turned out to be the best friend you ever had?

Meet Brooke: Popular, powerful and hating every minute of it, she’s the “It” girl at Douglas High in Lake Champion, Minnesota. Her real ambition? Using her operatic mezzo as a ticket back to NYC, where her family lived before her dad ran off with an up and coming male movie star.

Now meet Kathryn: An overachieving soprano with an underachieving savings account, she’s been a leper ever since Brooke punched her at a party junior year. For Kath, music is the key to a much-needed college scholarship.

The stage is set for a high-stakes duet between the two seniors as they prepare for the prestigious Blackmore competition. Brooke and Kathryn work toward the Blackmore with eyes not just on first prize but on one another, each still stinging from a past that started with friendship and ended in betrayal. With competition day nearing, Brooke dreams of escaping the in-crowd for life as a professional singer, but her scheming BFF Chloe has other plans. And when Kathryn gets an unlikely invitation to Homecoming, she suspects Brooke of trying to sabotage her with one last public humiliation.

As pressures mount, Brooke starts to sense that the person she hates most might just be the best friend she ever had. But Kathryn has a decision to make. Can she forgive? Or are some rivalries for life?

Wow! You know, I was looking forward to reading Rival because it sounded quite interesting and I thought that I would like it, but I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did! This book focuses mainly around the ups and downs of friendship between two very opposite high school girls, and I found this book to be quite relatable to my own high school experiences and just a great overall read!

As I mentioned before, Rival is about the ups and downs of the friendship between Queen B Brooke and shy, quiet girl Kathryn. The story flips back and forth between present day (their senior year of high school) and the previous year, the year in which Kathryn and Brooke became friends and how it all fell apart. We get a good look into the minds of each girl and the misunderstandings between them, as well as the stress in each of their lives, that caused their relationship to crumble.

I'm not really a big fan of the mean girl (really, who is?) but in Rival, although I felt connected to both Brooke and Kathryn, I, oddly enough, felt more of a connection with Brooke. From the outside looking in, Brooke seems to have the perfect life; she comes from a wealthy family and is popular, beautiful and talented, but as we et to know her better, we really get a good glimpse at her real depths. Her life is really no where near as perfect as it seems. Her father, to whom she vies for attention, lives in New York with his big-time actor boyfriend and is so consumed by his job and relationship that he more or less neglects his daughter. It's so clear how much Brooke seeks his attention and approval and it's really quite heartbreaking how much he really hurts and disappoints her, and her realtionship with her father obviously has a huge effect on her.

Throughout the course of the book, it also became very apparent how little Brooke's "friends" really knew her. Brooke cared so much about her music and her friends would always call the people in the choir, which Brooke was a part of, the "music freaks". All her friends cared about was partying, getting drunk, the homecoming dance, and being popular, and Brooke told them throughout the book that she didn't really care about any of those things, but that she cared about music, but they would always ignore her when she said it. There was an obvious change in Brooke throughout the book as she began to realize what real friendship was, and that maybe she had lost it when she ended her friendship with Kathryn.

Although I felt more connected to Brooke, I did quite like Kathryn as well. Being a shy, quiet girl myself, I always find that I can relate to characters that are shy and quiet too. One thing that I didn't really like about Kathryn was that, during the parts where we were flashed back to her junior year, the year that she began hanging out with Brooke and became popular, she completely ditched Matt, her self-confessed nerd best friend, because she didn't want her new friends to think that she was werid for hanging out with him. Although I didn't really like the fact that she stopped hanging out with him because she was worried what people would think, it was realistic, stuff like that happens all the time in real life. Luckily for Kathryn, Matt was a really good guy and he watched out for her even when she was being horrible to him, but he did that for her because he had feelings for her, which Kathryn seemed somewhat unaware of until it was pointed out to her by others, or when he made it very clear to her himself. Although she wasn't perfect, I did feel that Kathryn really reflected the way that people change and act in high school or when hanging around with a different crowd.

Sara Bennett Wealer is a great writer and she was really able to capture the realities of friendship, family and of just being a teenager, in Rival. The voices that she created were very realistic and she was able to perfectly potray the complicated relationships between Brooke, Kathryn and the other characters and this made the book that much more enjoyable and relatable.

Overall, I would definitley recommend picking up Rival. It was a book that I really liked and that I read in one sitting because I just didn't want to put it down. Highly recommended!

Blood and Flowers
by Penny Blubaugh

Trudged. Floss didn't trudge, she always moved with the grace of a trained ballet dancer.
I swallowed and licked my lips. "Lucia?"
When she turned to look at me she moved as if her eyes were being pulled away from those petals by a slow puppet string. When I saw those eyes my stomach dipped.
      "It's bad, isn't it?" I asked.
